Warfare
the only reason that this movie isn't getting 5 stars is bc i havent done my own research on this movie or this mission so i cannot say its accurate with my full chest even though thats what it aimed to achieve
but oh my god what a fantastic movie !!!!!!
the first scene that really caught my eye was the scene where elliott is looking out of the hole in the wall, only to see regular iraqi life still continuing: children playing, people having tea, vendors selling fruit, while literal US SEALS were watching them. the juxtaposition between the harsh gruffness of elliott, watching day-to-to war ridden iraq which has become the domestic norm for these people puts it into perspective
i also really like how the SEALS are so natural with each other, they have this almost nonchalance at the beginning, where they're joking about stolen nike hoodies and spitting into waterbottles, it's showing their camaraderie and brotherhood. the actors also have very good chemistry with each other (which of course they all got incredibly close filming this movie, physically and emotionally) and that really translates into the soldiers they're playing it all seems very natural and effortless to have banter bounce off one another
A24 has always been incredible in distributing films with amazing suspense, the kind of suspense that makes your stomach kinda twist in anticipation, and it's evident in warfare, the first 30-ish minutes is the soldiers essentially doing nothing, passing time, being bored, building suspense.
"it's like theyre going on a field trip" i say far too optimistically. i did not trust that cas-evac for ONE SECOND dude i knew something was off, the suspense was too high and the cost was too much they had so much to lose i knew something was way off
it was around the time where ray pulled elliott into the house when i realised why this was an A24 movie — this is a horror movie, it's one of the most horror filed horror movies i've seen, it's not a slasher and it's not supernatural, it's horror in the way that it's brutal, honest, and real, and that's what's scary about it, this shit actually happened, it's a real thing people go through and that realisation is fucking horrific, aside from the fact it's a war movie, it's got A24 all over it, the filmography, the sound design, the acting, the gore, it's painfully A24
shoutout joseph quinn, his acting was genuinely impeccable, he scared the shit out of me for like 15 minutes, speaking of which elliott scared me too i was CONVINCED that man was gone for so long when he shot up and took that breath oh my god
overall a great piece of anti-war propaganda, bc girl i do not want to join the military now mark my words babygirl !! anyone who says this movie is soulless did NOT watch the same movie as i did. BUT speaking of babygirl i love all the men in this thank youuuu shoutout cosmo i havent seen you since calm with horses !! loved all hour and thirty-five minutes of this
