Hereditary
What an experience. I just watched this in a nearly packed theater and being able to hear all the gasps and the laughing happening near me solidifies how fucked up and fresh this film is.
This is one of the smartest and well-made horror film's ever made. To be honest, since this film has been being compared to The Exorcist, I will say that this film is better. The film uses subtle hints throughout to unravel the story, but are unrealized until the final act hits. This is what smart filmmaking is made of. A film that can make it so that plot points can only be fully realized once a second watch has been made.
What this film does well as a horror film is that it doesn't push the horror right in front of your face. This movies main concern over scaring you is to make a focused story. Nothing in this film happens without a purpose and make it even more terrifying once all the puzzle pieces fit. Performances were stellar in this especially Toni Collette. They are points in the film where she goes completely off the walls and it is no less than stellar.
I really don't have any problems with this film. It's a horror film that other directors would wish they could be able to make. The fact that this is a debut film is what makes it even more surprising. I really want to go see this again, and still be in absolute shock once the ending comes along.
