Moonlight
I was 15 when I first watched moonlight. I distinctly remember being so absorbed by the whole movie I felt embarrassed at the same time. It burned my whole body alive, I didn’t blink, I breathed trying desperately to disappear but get enough air to still watch. I was too aware of where I was, that my family was with me, the people near me, I couldn’t stop looking for a second though. so whatever self consciousness I had, the embarrassment, the tingle in every part of my body couldn’t stop me for feeling a single stronger feeling: enchanted.
I left moonlight lighter than I felt in my head, and like a rock in my body.
Now I’ve rewatched it, I’m still spellbound by it for the same reasons but also different ones. First off because I have to say it or else I’m not gonna stop saying it: Trevante Rhodes is so fucking fine I would NOT know how to deal with all that. Watching a movie you saw at 15 vs 24 is having the same reaction but dealt differently and my GOOOOOD. At 15 I think I squeaked or something? An equivalent, but I definitely gripped that arm rest TIGHT. My current reaction I put my pen in my mouth and bit it. I couldn’t stop saying he looked good. My loyalty to Trevante Rhodes got me to watch Birdbox (I hate that movie). He should’ve been in more. He should be in every genre on my screen. He should be everywhere. I’m thirsty as hell but he’s also an AMAZING actor.
The actors in this movie use body language beautifully. Seaweed obey the movement of water, and these actors especially the ones for Chiron and Kevin obey the movement of character. It’s gorgeous to watch, it’s continuous, it becomes a tell even for a character. The way Chiron is shy around Kevin as adults, Kevin younger self poking out in places.
The look of this movie is beautiful, the wet dream scene which I forgot about is actually a new fav of mine because the mix of reality with colour lighting. I love a dream scene. My favourite scenes still hold up, this movie still gives you scenes you can look at in a different way again.
This movie pacing and flow is fantastic, never a dull moment and doesn’t try to rush you. The movie is deceptive in its quietness making you think it’s not fast but the editing gives a flow moving quick. The sound in this movie is interesting, it’s filled with quiet moments sounds of elsewhere muffled and only the actors words are so clear.
The movie yearns: for the water, peace, touch, a man, love. Every part of this move yearns. God they don’t make things that YEARN anymore. We gotta YEARN sometimes.
Beautiful movie, my favourite, what a movie.
