This is breathtaking filmmaking. One of my favorite movies of the year, I was captivated from the first frame.
First and foremost, its gorgeous. Claire Mathon's cinematography feels hazy, fever dream, old. It sets the tone, helps create an atmosphere for the time period.
Johnny Greenwood's score is brilliant. Its at times regal, at times somber. It plays like classic royal orchestra and jazz fusion clashing against each other.
But the star of the piece is Kristen Stewart. I've long been a huge fan of her work, sure, most people look at her still as "the girl from Twilight", but she's so much more than that. Look at her performance in Personal Shopper, in the Clouds of Sils Maria, in Certain Women. She's a powerhouse. And this cements that. Her Diana is haunting & haunted. Lashing out against a system, against a family, that has betrayed her. And Stewarts performances the role masterfully. There's an assuredness to it, a command of the role unlike anything she's done before.
Its the best performance I've seen by any actress all year, & I hope she gets that gold.
