Kaboom
this mf Araki just doesn't miss. It's insane, he's insane, and I'm insane, so it's all good.
Never expected to be so in love with all of his work, but of the 7 films I've seen from him I haven't seen a single bad one.
I love his style visually, musically, narratively, comically, dramatically, everything.
Every single work of his is a full-on vibe all around and I just sink deeper and deeper into them. I think this has solidified him as my favourite director ever.
And this film is surprisingly amazing.
An ode to sexuality; the embodyment of the feeling of wanting to fuck that crush that doesn't like you back; a love letter to those horny late-night fantasies; the biography of the love-starved; and a spit on the face to the straight patriarchal notions of sex and love. Genuinely, beyond the whole batshit crazy of a story, this is clearly about how both sex and love are corrupted by heteronormative patriachal values. It's not even subtle, you just need to avoid getting distracted by the insanity.
Visually top-notch, it gathers the best of Mysterious Skins and Smiley Face, which are my second and third visually favourite films of Gregg Araki. And the vibes here are just as grand and liberating but empty and oppresive as Nowhere, but mixed into this neo-noir type deal.
Most of y'all will disagree with me, but this is so Gregg Araki and I love it so much.
As I said, this mf doesn't miss.
Also, long live The Messiah James Duval. I have no idea what religion he represents, but count me in 100%.
