Obsession
For anyone too lazy to listen to the director’s commentary, here’s a masterlist of everything revealed in it that hasn’t been previously stated (so no script differences or other things that have been publicly announced i.e. the extended car scene)
(Spoilers, obviously)
- There was a version of the first car scene filmed with Cooper playing Bear that will probably never see the light of day
- Inde almost never rehearsed her physical movements in advance and Curry only came on board with this during the first bed scene
- Curry included a dove in the film because he would always hear its sounds as a kid, but now the dove is going extinct and he doesn’t hear it as much anymore
- Curry loves his long takes
- All the discordant instrument sounds in the background of the Cassell’s Music scene were all done by Rock
- Restaurant scene was the final scene filmed
- Curry edited the film in Premiere Pro and said that he will likely edit all his films on it
- There was a scene which was cut for time where a worker came up to Bear when he’s behind the counter at the restaurant and tells him that he’s not supposed to stand there
- Curry told the makeup artists to watch a bunch of uncanny valley makeup tutorials on TikTok to prep for the crying scene
- The flower walk was actually a dancer, not Inde
- Curry doesn’t actually know what Nikki’s waste is made out of, he thinks beans but isn’t sure
- The Hansel and Gretel monologue was written by Curry’s dad Jeff because he didn’t want it to sound like his writing
- Curry wants to text Ari Aster to ask about how to properly do inserts of people typing
- The team saved thousands of dollars by buying a sex doll and completely destroying it to create Sarah’s body
- The bathroom scene was partially inspired by a short Curry made called Contemplation, which he says is near impossible to watch
— Not on the commentary but I’ve seen the short and I can confirm, it’s very similar: it’s all about a woman trying to find the best way to shoot herself in her bathroom before her boyfriend gets home before eventually taking a bunch of pills after looking on some assisted suicide website. She is about to die but chickens out and vomits them up before sitting back down - the moment she hears her boyfriend enter her home, she picks up the gun and shoots herself through the mouth. Funnily enough, the song that plays over the credits is Forever - the same one that Obsession ends on.
