Heat
"Told you. I'm never going back."
"Yeah."
Sometimes you just get a movie that astounds you from the moment you first finish it and it stays in your brain. Wasn't around for the 1995 release but became enough of a movie fan to appreciate the fact that Heat was hyped up solely for the notion of Al Pacino and Robert De Niro sharing scenes together. They only have three direct interactions or so across a near three hour runtime, but those encounters are magic as you'd want them to be.
Michael Mann is a boss. The guy is clearly the patron saint that Christopher Nolan prays to before he sleeps every night. Everything from the brutal daytime Los Angeles sun to the neon drenched shadows at night, it's candy for the eyes. The action sequences are white knuckle and the sound mixing is pumping and aggressive. Heat is clearly, to me, the best modern crime thriller of all time.
And that ending?
Grab the tissues.
