The Thing
“Trust's a tough thing to come by these days. Tell you what - why don't you just trust in the Lord?**“
For a movie that ends so unanswered and blatantly uncertain, not sure there’s another American film (even in Carpenter’s own Apocalypse trilogy to which this belongs) that so succinctly captures the feeling that the world is irreversibly ending. No real hope for survival, just a desperate attempt to stop the outbreak before it can swallow up anything more than it already has. MacReady’s quiet, somber recording sums up the entire heavy feeling of the film in such a simple fashion. Abandon all hope. The greatest work of one of our great filmmakers— and it’s absolutely brimming with nihilism and bleak, harrowing death.
“At least there’ll be some kind of record.”
