American Psycho
2000 | Christian Bale | Willem Dafoe | Jared Leto | Reese Witherspoon
Since Ice Nine Kills released their song "Hip To Be Scared" a few months ago, I've had a strong desire to rewatch "American Psycho". Now that fit perfect in the Hooptober, because I have to watch the sequel.
After seeing the film for the first time more than two years ago, I was sure that it would be one of my all-time favorites and this assumption was only confirmed in the rewatch. The film is perfect. Perfect down to the smallest detail. Mary Harron's direction, Christian Bale's nuanced performance that is not only outstanding but belongs to the best of his career, Andrzej Sekula's cinematography, the set design, the score, the songs and the way in which they are integrated into the action, the pacing and the dialogs. I have absolutely nothing to complain about. The film is incredibly quotable, the writing is great and witty and the film doesn't just work on one level. The black humor satire works extremely well and the criticism of things like materialism, superficiality, masculinity and apathy is a lot of fun. There are countless moments that are just hilariously funny and smart at the same time.
Knowing what the end is, I noticed a whole lot of things that support the theory that Patrick is an unreliable narrator and that what we see didn't happen that way. Personally, I am firmly convinced of it.
"American Psycho" is a masterpiece in my opinion. Everything about the film is right and makes it an utterly entertaining, funny and smart film in which every single scene is simply fantastic. And if you would excuse me now, I have to return some videotapes.
