Fear the Water
The third time I see "Jaws", I like it even better than before. The film is more than perfect. The film is an absolute masterpiece.
Steven Spielberg's directig is excellent and he manages to stage both the shark and the characters perfectly. The characters are definitely one of the highlights of the film, because every one of them acts understandable and is very personable. I love Chief Brody, Hooper, and Quint. They are all just wonderfully written and staged. You always know exactly what the characters are thinking and the film manages to convey their feelings to the viewer very well. The initial desperation and overwhelming on Amity Island and from Chief Brody can be felt every second and the film is extremely exciting and nerve-wracking from the start. The film has a dense atmosphere throughout and you are on the edge of your seat the whole time, but the film also impresses with its quiet moments that are among the best in the film. The scene at the dining table when Brody's son is imitating his movements or the scenes in which Quint talks about his past are really great and the latter in particular manages to transition perfectly from a humorous and amusing moment to a very depressing one. Because the film manages that very well. It finds the perfect balance between horror, suspense, drama and comedy and combines all these elements better than almost any other film. In addition, the film is not boring for a single second. As already mentioned, the film is very tense and atmospheric from start to finish and the pacing and the tempo are fantastic.
Roy Scheider, Richard Dreyfuss and Robert Shaw all play outstandingly and develop a very great and beautiful dynamic between each other. Of course, John William's also has to be mentioned, whose score, according to Steven Spielberg, provided half of the film's success. Because his score is more than rightly one of the best and most iconic scores in film history. The cinematography and editing are also really excellent and the film looks really wonderful. Although the film is 45 years old, the effects undoubtedly look better than those of the modern shark films. The shark is a real threat and its appearance is really impressive and the deaths all look great too.
With "Jaws", Steven Spielberg has not only created the best shark film of all time, the class of which will probably never be reached again, but also one of his best films, if not his best, even if the decision is very difficult. "Jaws" is more than just a creature feature, it's about the characters.
