Se7en
1995 | David Fincher | Morgan Freeman | Brad Pitt
I've been meaning to rewatch this for quite some time and I'm very glad I did now. "Se7en" is one of the many masterpieces by David Fincher, the best director of all time.
The film is so dark, gritty, dirty and pessimistic, takes place in a city where it rains all the time, people are apathetic and crime is everywhere, and thus has a uniquely tense atmosphere and is definitely one of the best, if not even the best representative of it’s genre.
Fincher's staging is so precise and the great production design and the outstanding cinematography give the film a great look that is very gloomy for most of the film, only to be broken by the sun in the unbelievable tense finale. In addition, Howard Shore's score is outstanding and contributes greatly to the atmosphere and feeling of the film. The screenplay is very well written and perfectly paced and the dialogues and characters are great. In addition to the gruesome crime scenes and murders, it is the small moments, the dialogues and the relationships between the characters that distinguish "Se7en".
In addition, the film has an incredibly good cast. Brad Pitt and Morgan Freeman as the two detectives both deliver some of the best performances of their careers, and Gwyneth Paltrow also plays great. A certain actor, you all know who, but I still don't want to reveal in case someone has not seen the film yet, plays absolutely outstanding and adds immense value to the film with his presence and his performance.
Furthermore, the film has one of the best endings in film history and some dialogues and sentences like "Oh ...! He didn't know." have an incredible impact and of course some of the dialogues are iconic and even known by people who haven’t seen this masterpiece for some reason.
With "Se7en" David Fincher, who has created the best true crime film with "Zodiac" and the best true crime series with "Mindhunter", has created one of the best fictional crime films and truly deserves his place as the best director of all time.
From beginning to end a highly tense film that is simply perfect.
