Obsession
I was hooked on this from the start. When the big kirk found the poor kitty dead I felt genuine anxiety but despite that I enjoyed this film a lot.
It's so sad how badly some people misunderstand this. They make it seem like this was some new 6th season of You when in reality it was about a selfish guy who doesn't have the balls to just ask his crush out so he ends up cursing her. Nikki wasn't obsessed with Bear out of her free will, he forced her into that and throughout the film we get flashes of the real her realizing what's happening and freaking out to the point of wanting to kill herself. All while between these scenes we basically see him raping her and forcing the relationship.
The true villain in this was bear. Even though he somewhat knows the real Nikki is stuck and what they have between them isn't real, he chooses to continue it anyway. He ignores the moments when Nikki acts insane and the ones where the real Nikki comes out, just to satisfy his own needs and feelings for her.
One of the most disturbing scenes to me was the one where Bear is about to sneak out while Nikki is sleeping in the bed next to him. As he's walking out the real Nikki starts talking to him, quietly begging for him to take her life. All bear says is "whats so bad about being with me?" Before walking out and leaving Nikki still stuck in that state. It's genuinely disgusting to see like this dude was genuinely a psychopath or sum. And the fact that after this scene he goes to the park to see Sarah and basically almost kisses her like man make up your mind do you want Nikki or no??
The cinematography was definitely one of the strong points in this film. I loved the use of lights and shadows to show Nikkis obsession towards Bear aswell as the still shots of her smiling and doing other creepy shit. Just in general her potrayl throughout the whole movie was so creepy yet amazing.
The overall coloring was also really pretty and had almost a nostalgic feel to it. I'm so tired of the Netflix marvel ahh coloring this is what I need more of.
Also, I do have to mention the soundtrack. There were at least three distinct times in the theater where I turned to look at my boyfriend specifically because of the song choices. So so so many good songs as well as just the general atmospheric background music all amazing and fit the vibe of the film so well.
This film felt nothing like most horror movies nowdays. It was so special and unique in so many different ways and i just loved it. Great songs, atmosphere, cinematography as well as incredible acting performances especially from Inde Navarrette. I also thought it was cool how they didn't make the characters "gen z me bruh" type and actually made the complicated along with making the internet culture accurate.
Atmosphere in this was incredible as well. Along with the soundtrack and cinematography, the environment and relationships gave this film so much realness. The different environments felt so real and lived in and just beautiful as well as the relationships which felt true and layered.
Curry Barker is such a promising director I hope he keeps making more weird indie films.
