I think people do often forget that you parents are people, especially when you are a child. Its hard sometimes to give them that grace of humanity after everything that they've done for you or to you. do you forgive them for their shotty attempt at parenthood? or do you hold them accountable for their mistakes? especially because of the consequences you have personally faced because of them. I do appreciate that this film does give the context that paul mescalls character does love his child, often in spite of what he has going on. that is important. I do think that doesn't make his shortcomings any less impactful and important. I do feel every once of sorrow from each of these characters too, it feels like they are in a constant state of mourning each other, knowing that their time together is always fleeting. its an ache that I love dearly.
it is a perfect movie. visually unique too, often the characters arent the focus of shots, maybe showing them in a reflection or at the edge of the frame. it really reinforces the idea that we are watching a memory. its not all the way there.
