Whiplash
This movie has a darker meaning after rewatching it.
Genuinely one of the greatest films of the 21st century, and it stands right next to Memories of Murder. The story is compelling, with outstanding visuals and a well-picked cast. J. K. Simmons gives an incredible performance—easily his best work—and he absolutely deserved that Oscar.
The plot is interesting, and it’s not unpredictable, and the fast pacing keeps you engaged throughout the film . The relationship between Andrew and Fletcher is dark and unsettling, and it’s written so well that it keeps the audience both entertained and shocked.
The cinematography is mesmerizing and memorable, especially with its iconic scenes and dark yellow color scheme. The lighting is amazing. “Whiplash” and “Caravan” were perfect musical choices and really highlight the importance of jazz in the film.
The ending is dark, showing Andrew becoming almost like a machine for Fletcher, while his dad feels like he’s losing his son. Small details—like Andrew wearing darker clothes—reflect his transformation. It really makes you think about what happens after.
Overall, I barely have any criticisms. This film is a masterpiece, and I understand why people adore it. It also shows how obsession can drive people to extreme lengths.
