Sunshine
What a masterpiece
Danny Boyle editing choices can be a bit jarring at times but I think that they work so well here to establish how as the crew gets closer to the Sun, the more insane and unexplainable shit gets. Searle’s obsession with the Sun combined with the wacky editing choices set up how Pinbaker could become so insane and deranged. I think the third act switch solidifies this. I know that a lot of people dislike that it becomes a slasher, but it really doesn’t. Pinbaker is so much more than a standard slasher villain and I’ve always viewed his character as what Searle could’ve been - someone obsessed with the scale and sheer magnitude of the Sun. Compared to such a beautiful, horrific, and large entity, what are we but space dust? Who are we to decide that we can dictate something as magnificent as the Sun? What is a man to a god? Such fantastic cosmic horror that comes together so well for me.
