Obsession
Long live 4:3!
An absolute masterpiece in the style budget movies can have, I don't know how movies can get away with "Netflix" lighting when budget movies like this can absolutely crush the simple staples like motivated lighting in every scene and have life in every shot.
The camera work was brilliant, the right mix of still and moving shots filled every scene with such dread. Obviously was 4:3 so worth 5 stars, but I could tell it was produced with love, the lens choices had character and the dramatic use of focus was used sparingly but brilliantly.
I've read a lot about Bear being the true "villain" of this movie, however I can't bring myself to feel the same. Bear is a pretty average guy, I completely felt for him all throughout the first quarter and honestly in the scenario he is in I can't say he did anything that wrong. It was messed up in the sleeping scene, but was he really expected to kill her? And does it make him a bad guy for not?
I also read about the script and Inde's interpretation - my take away from her portrayal is that there could have been something between the two if he'd have been honest to her from the beginning, but with the later reveal of her relationship with Ian, I am split.
I thought the music was great, especially the "obsession" theme, I thought it was used great and the willow tree tune was used perfectly - especially in that end scene, so well I think they could have cut the last bit revealing the willow wish.
I think my only criticisms could be on the acting in the first half, it was a bit dry, I didn't necessarily feel they had the connection they intended to show but it definitely warms up and gets into the flow, equally so I could be convinced it was purposeful.
And I think how some horror movies overuse the jumps are this movie overused screaming - tons it down bro.
This is a love story not a romance.
