Loving Vincent
If only I could’ve been one of them.
Loving Vincent is an extraordinary film, out of this world. Composed of over 65,000 oil paintings, all done by hand, the production spanned more than nine years, from the first stroke to the release.
The film explores the depth of Vincent van Gogh’s life and mysterious death, and how it impacted those who knew him. Told through the eyes of Armand Roulin, the son of postman Joseph Roulin, the story follows his journey from Arles as he sets out to deliver Vincent’s final letter to his brother Theo. Upon reaching Père Tanguy, however, Armand learns that Theo has also passed away.
Determined to understand what truly happened, Armand continues on to Auvers, seeking answers about Vincent’s final days and hoping to deliver the letter to his former doctor, Dr. Paul Gachet.
The exploration of other perspectives of his death, primarily Dr. Mazery’s suggestion that Vincent was in fact killed, and didn’t commit suicide is exceedingly interesting.
And as postman Joseph Roulin said; “life can even bring down the strong” is an important reminder that anyone, even the people who are the least expected to do it, can commit suicide.
