Alien
It’s just masterful filmmaking in every way! The real question is what kinda alien person are you, a 79 or an 86? I’d probably say the soft spot I have for aliens (1986) would make it my favourite for sure but only by the a smidge, as a film though I think alien (1979) is probably near perfect!
On a rewatch it just reminded me how simple & sparse the structure is! The minimalism is one of the great things about the whole film, violence is fleeting and minimal, it’s all done in suggestion too.
Doing the ensemble cast for the first act pretty much is fantastic, it’s a great bit of suspense & tension to see who’s gonna get picked off first, cause they are all on a equal footing in the beginning, your not really too sure who your lead is until Sigourney Weaver character “Ripley” becomes the lead towards the end! In another film Tom Skerritt character would’ve been the hero in this film but he gets picked off first.
The whole production design is top! If you want to isolate every section of its production weather that be sound design, practical effects, cinematography and of course performances too all of them are just simply amazingly done, every angle, every bit of the film is perfectly executed!
Also I love the design of the aliens themselves! That H.R.Giger biology and technology piping is just so evocative, it’s gross and slightly sexualised too! Just great stuff.
I think for characters, Ripley is by far the standout! Very well developed, but for me I think Ash is the most interesting! He’s got a cold exterior, just the all round corporate man doing what is required of him! I’m on like a huge deep dive of finding out how much Ash knows cause he’s a very very mysterious character.
The films just amazing! It’s horror inflicted and everything happens at a happenstance, that’s what makes it so great! They are all just ordinary contractors that work on a spaceship doing what they do to get paid!
Horror and sci-fi masterpiece from beginning to end!!
