Wicked
wicked trailer today…only fair to rewatch for the BILLIONTH TIME.
Elphaba & G(a)linda my tragic, doomed beloveds.
I can say so much about wicked; the stage play, the book, this movie…but i can still never explain just the impact that the story of these two women (who love each other so much, & would do anything for one another, stuck in such a doomed dynamic) have on me.
The rawness from Cynthia as Elphie pierces through you, & lingers—every song sung, every glimmer in the eye, every moment of uncertainty, & the desperate desire to be understood & wanted, you can feel it through her to where you can’t help but to route for this underdog. You watch her struggle to find her place in oz, going on this journey of self discovery, confidence, love, & justice & what happens to her just when she thinks she’s finally making good…it’s devastating.
Ari as g(a)linda, my misunderstood angel, I see so many people diminish g(a)linda’s character, or question her love for Elphie…she is out of her mind in love with elphaba, but she’s holding herself back to the life she’s been accustomed too—trapped between a rock and a hard place; if she follows her heart, follows her “friend” (the love of her life mind you) she loses everything: her title, her status, her dreams, her goal…& while she sympathizes with her best friend, she’s not as forward about the problems in oz & she declines the opportunity to live a life making oz a better place together. She sales herself on the idea that by staying, she can fix oz by infiltrating the system from the inside in a position of power, whereas Elphie craves immediate action. It’s genuinely heartbreaking.
Another thing I love so so much about wicked is that both G(a)linda & Elphaba are morally shades of gray, intricately complicated characters. They both do some things…some arguably good & bad showing that neither one of them are inherently 100% good, or 100% bad.
They both remind you through their actions the entirety of their story that they really are just people. People are always going to be more than just black & white—& I love how they showcase that.
There’s so much more I can say but I’m just gonna chalk it up to I love those doomed lesbians so badly &
im truly not prepared for the masterpiece & beautifully tragic conclusion of wicked pt2—we will truly be changed for good.
