Marvel Zombies

I really didn’t like the zombie episode of ‘What If…?’ but also really liked the trailer, so I was cautiously optimistic going into this and I’ve gotta say… I really enjoyed it! It’s a lot better than the original zombies episode which suffered due to the humour. It was what I was most worried about because the characters would be in a dire situation or a one of their friends would die and they’d drop a crappy one liner, which just left me disillusioned with the characters and the situation because if they don’t take it seriously why should I? But in ‘Marvel Zombies’ you really feel that deep despair and hopelessness. When a character dies you feel the weight of their loss this time around, throughout the whole series. While I’m still not a fan of the humour it works better here because it contrasts the dark situation the characters find themselves in rather than feeling out of place. It was great to see characters throughout phase 4-5 finally interact. I loved the dynamic between Kamala, Kate and Riri and I’m now completely sold on that Young Avengers movie if it ever gets made. Kamala is the heart of the show, she inspires all the other characters and represents the little hope they have left in this world, only for each episode to slowly crush that hope bit by bit, and while depressing I love that the series doesn’t shy away from that. The ending cliffhanger was so good and so horrifying I’d actually rather they left the story there. Fitting the theme of the show and having a hopeless ending. The action and gore was top notch, while I’m really not a fan of the ‘What If…?’ animation style, it lends itself to some pretty great action scenes. Although at times it does feel like the actors are giving their all and the characters’ faces are barely emoting. Zombified Scarlet Witch makes a terrifying antagonist and the show fully embraces the idea of Marvel heroes becoming zombies, demonstrating how their powers make a zombie apocalypse ten times more terrifying. One final thing to note is that Blade Moon Knight is the coolest thing ever and the show gets an extra half star for that alone.
