Annie Hall
“I guess thats why we keep going through it because most of us need the eggs” what an amazing ending shot on so many levels. Not just in the ending but I want to talk about that shot specifically. From the window they eat at we see Alvy and Annie talking. Its almost like we are people in the restaurant and we glance out the window for a 5 seconds because we’re interested in something besides digestion and running your mouth. In that we see the scope of the character Alvy’s life compared to the whole of the world. Its so complex just like our own and no matter how they’re relationship is how it went how it started or ends the only people it matters to are each other. Its a sense of meaninglessness to the whole picture of the universe not a nihilistic one but a sour sweet one doesn’t matter what happens to our lives because thats life its experience its trying its creation its depending on each other nothing to move the world but thats what it’s all about loving someone to in a way feel more connected in the world because we need the eggs. In the technical side I love how the camera almost has a consciousness and eyes belonging to it. We the audience are shown this movie from third person nearly the entire time like the very much autobio it is. Nearly every shot is the way you would see a stranger in a public place. But the camera does more than that to keep us as not only a watching audience but participating audience. We are more zoomed out in intimate scenes. We are first person during some conversations and moments like we had to feel what he felt and what he saw through his eyes in the conversations. Back to the audience participation he acknowledges we are here just as much as he acknowledges any other character on camera he breaks the 4th wall and asks questions what do we think about certain situations? Have we ever dealt with something like this? The 4th wall is something besides quirks he uses it to have us as reflection the same way you note down uses of reading in a bible. Its a constant informative and emotional movie about New York 70’s culture the perspective of LA 70s culture from New York eyes and overall relationships the fragility softness and at times when you want it to be durability as well as thats enough to be said as Human connection on its own. We don’t communicate with each other function as people no matter what relationship form it is especially romantically because they serve a purpose no no we communicate and connect because we need to without any rational reason. We need the eggs.
