GoodFellas
Like most films it always goes romanticizing to accepting reality. Henry Hill ever since growing up romanticized the mafia life and still did in the early stages of it. To start as everyone knows the songs we go from the 50s love songs portraying his love for life of the underground when he romanticizes it when he gets out of prison it switches to 60s rock fully developing the comd hard reality nothing to romanticize about drug sales its 60s psychedelic rock thats the reality nothing slow anymore only fast pace business conducted unethically. The shots themselves portray perfectly the mafia life itself the camera is always tracking always moving if it seems like theirs a break there is audio pre lapping the scene you can’t take your eyes off the screen or get up to take a piss it demands your attention and rightly so the audience gives it. It shows how fast things move in the life and more importantly how fast life moves in the underground always moving and moving to the end of it all. The shots go from long tracking shots to the eventually fast cuts in to montages like we see in the ending scenes they don’t have the safety net of the old ways its cold hard reality of actually being a part of something. And the editing draws your attention as well every single freeze frame like a painting tells a story not just the painting itself but the words over it. This movie is different than the rest of movies he tells us since the start its narration nothing left for us to figure out we just take his word for it. Is he justifying his actions? Is he telling the truth? We don’t know we trust narrator root for him till the very end of the movie in the court scene breaking the 4th wall addressing the audience he is confessing to us rather than letting us pry for his confession through the movie. The entire movie goes through an idealization to the point where once you can’t go back thats where you are stuck. It shows gangsters for what they truly are no glorifying like the god father. This is what the life is like more accurate than anything. In depth enough to write more not enough analyzation and watches write more. This is a master piece of the century and the century after it we live in now and will forever be a cornerstone of visual and audio medium story telling. Absolutely in every way perfect.
