Before Midnight
I struggle to put the Before trilogy into words, but I’ll try it anyway.
I am still in complete awe at the amount of raw passion, delicate insight, perfectly delivered humor, and uncompromising realism displayed within these three films.
Three films which now hold a special place in my heart. Films which I will certainly revisit time and time again in the future, and upon those rewatches, may very well become my favorite films of all time.
There’s just this surreal amount of chemistry between these two phenomenal actors that is completely undeniable. The way they talk to each other, hold each other, even look at each other feel wholly and utterly authentic. I wouldn’t be surprised to learn that Hawke and Delpy secretly always had a thing for each other.
And the dialogue, my god. Such wit and relatability and humor and wisdom, and it’s just so satisfying to hear play out that it’s like music to me.
Those lingering, uninterrupted shots of two souls simply talking through their thoughts and feelings feel surreal, and I often struggle to wrap my head around how it’s been ten minutes since there was a cut.
