Finding Nemo
Sometimes a movie from your childhood that means a lot ends up holding more sentimental value rather than actual film quality. But sometimes they just keep getting better.
Finding Nemo is probably my most watched movie of all time except maybe one other Pixar movie. It’s the earliest movie I remember seeing and it was my favourite movie until I turned 12. Of course when something means that much to you it’s scary to revisit it, I mean, who knows if it’s as good as I remember? Well, sufficed to say, Finding Nemo is still as good as the day it released.
It’s a technological marvel, a voice acting powerhouse and above all, a beautiful story. Besides Wall-E, this is Pixar’s most expansive and epic movie to date. It’s such an amazing journey, not just visually and setting wise but emotionally as well.
My favourite scene, that I think encapsulates this whole movie, is when Marlin tells the young turtles his story and it travels across the whole ocean all the way to Nigel who tells Nemo. It’s such a perfect sequence which really cements the scope and grandeur of this journey and the lengths a father is willing to go to for the only thing in his life, his son. I don’t cry in movies but this scene gets me blinking really fast and looking in the other direction.
I know it sounds like I’m being over dramatic for an animated movie about fish, well, I probably am, but it’s really a movie that deserves all the praise it can get. Obviously I’m looking at this through the largest pair of nostalgia goggles ever manufactured but still, it deserves a spot on any “Best of all time” list, animated or otherwise.
