Babylon
Man he was SO close to achieving another perfect movie with this. I gotta say though, I really liked it a lot more than I did when I first saw it (sorry I’ve been avoiding this rewatch fellow logbook movie club members).
It’s just a little too long and a little too self indulgent at points. I get what he was going for, but cut down the beginning party, cut down the Toby Maguire absurd dungeon party scene, and (controversial take here I know) cut out the ending montage and it’d be PERFECT. (Once again I get the point of the montage, but the message actually is so clear and hits even hard without it, Diego Calva’s AMAZING performance already conveys everything we need, you don’t need to shove the message in our face)
Also just filled with such amazing characters, story arcs, and performances; my favorite being Jack Conrad’s.
Very glad I rewatched this.
P.S. “they found him in a forest in Oregon” might be the greatest line Damien Chazelle has ever written
