My rewatch of this film made me love it enough to put it in my top 10. This movie is so unbelievably dark, it puts other dark comedies to shame. The themes of spiritual guilt really stuck out to me the second time around, these are characters who were horrible and self destructive from the start, but as soon as they commit a sin unanimously viewed as unforgivable, they all lose their machismo and turn into the losers they actually are. I view this as a scathing indictment of 90s comedies, and their promotion of horrible characters as “well meaning dunces”. While the main characters are all genuinely horrible people, they are still people who make impulsive decisions, feel guilt, and have their own justifications behind their actions. So many dark comedies just make the main characters into unlikable caricatures, this movie shows the humanity behind the depravity. I don’t really call any films “angry” because showing anger in a movie doesn’t constitute the film or the director being angry, but this film was made with rage and hate. The juxtaposition of the upbeat mid 90s soundtrack over scenes of horrific murders and dismemberment; makes it feel like the movie is laughing at you. The harrowing scenes of paranoia and mental anguish are deeply unsettling, it feels like everything could crumble down any second, and it never lets up until that glorious ending. This movie really is transgressive and hateful. It is everything its critics say it is; racist, sexist, anti semitic, ableist, and profoundly evil, yet; I cannot help but love this disgusting movie. This is one of the best comedy films ever made, and one of my personal favorites of all time. 10/10

The posters and trailers of this movie make it look like a sequel to my big fat Greek wedding, but this is one of the darkest comedies ever made. The first 10 minutes of the film feel like a straightforward 2000’s comedy, and then it plunges into depravity and violence when the main characters accidentally kill a prostitute. The rest of the movie is them trying their best to cover up the killing, but failing miserably. I would rarely call a film “angry” but this movie genuinely hates everyone. The men are portrayed as total scumbags and losers, the women are superficial, and the kids are brats. The comedy comes from just how disturbing and evil things can get. One of my favorite scenes is when the main characters decide to give their victims a “proper Jewish burial” so their souls can pass on into heaven. They do this by trying to put their dismembered limbs back together like Lego pieces. That’s not even the darkest scene in the entire movie, I can’t even begin to describe just how messed up it gets, it really is something you have to see to believe. I’d say that this movie is similar to Freddy Got Fingered in some ways. Freddy got fingered and Very Bad Things were both critically panned when they first came out, but audiences started to understand what these movies were trying to do later on. Freddy Got Fingered is a parody of cheesy 2000’s comedies, while Very Bad Things is a total subversion of 2000s comedies. I think this movie deserves way more love than it has; there are very few movies which have made my jaw drop like this movie did. Even if you don’t laugh at this movie, I don’t think you could ever forget it.

HOLY FUCK - that was genuinely mental for so many reasons. every time you think their situation won’t get that much worse, it does and i think that’s one thing i really enjoyed is that it was unpredictable for the most of it. 

i only really watched it because my dad said it’s something i’d probably enjoy and the movie sounded like it would be a decent watch. i didn’t expect to enjoy it this much but was gladly surprised.

(didn’t expect to see christian slater kiss a man and have it cut straight to a funeral?!)
