Empire of the sun is really underrated mainly due to this not getting brought up amongst Spielbergs best. Christian bale is brilliant, even as a child u could tell he was going to be the highest standard of acting. So many heartbreaking but beautiful visuals. Needs to be talked about more.

there will never be another Spielberg, ever, he’s a class act. His films just have that certain type of magic that makes you keep wanting to go back to them. One thing i do love about him, is his war films. He is able to display the haunting and true nature of war, showing that is not all just fighting and battles, we follow this boy who is separated from his family, but he stills brings this display of hope at the camp. This is Bales breakout film, it set him up to be one of the greatest actors of our time. We are seeing some amazing talent in front of us. This film has got to be Spielberg's most underrated war film. His legacy will live on forever.

Feel conflicted about this..Spielberg's saccharine storytelling is hit or miss for me. Some powerful scenes and jaw-droppingly beautiful shots but the runtime just felt bloated and a lot of the relationships which the film relied upon didn't feel fully realized. Christian Bale was an incredible child actor but his character was honestly not as likable as he was supposed to be?
