Harriet finds art imitating life when she discovers certain songs can transport her back in time – literally. While she relives the past through romantic memories of her former boyfriend, her time travelling collides with a burgeoning new love interest in the present. As she takes her journey through the hypnotic connection between music and memory, she wonders – even if she could change the past, should she?
The Greatest Hits is a familiar yet engaging story that mixes time travel into an otherwise ordinary romantic drama. Coming off of watching some pretty miserable films I might have enjoyed this a bit more than most. The smallest sign of a cohesive film feels like a monumental achievement at this point. Jokes aside I enjoyed this, but it's certainly not flawless.
There's some corny dialogue and some annoying character decisions. Given what the characters been through you're willing to let it slide though. Time travel is probably the riskiest concept to have in a film, but they handled it well here. There's a unique twist with it that sets it apart from other films. I thought the performances were really great. Lucy Boynton was excellent and Justin H. Min gave a strong, grounded performance. The biggest flaw is the end - I kind of hated it. Without spoiling anything, the main character makes an extremely impactful decision that almost negates the rest of the film. It felt like the wrong choice, but maybe that's just me.
