Director-Claude Chabrol. This is the second Chabrol I have seen, and thus, I had no expectations from this film, but it was still enjoyable. The film follows the protagonist as he deals with jealousy. The film deals with some quite relatable themes such as jealousy for people who live happy lives or for the rich. I assume all of us have at least once made scenarios in our head about some ill befalling such people so as to feel better about ourselves. The protagonist is a pitiable and pathetic excuse for a human being which makes us angry with each time he appears successfully. The protagonist is a failed writer who by some divine intervention gets an invitation from a lady to come live with her and her husband, a successful writer much to the dismay of the protagonist. The film has a Hitchcockian feel to it that makes it even better as it indeed reminded me of Rear Window. The protagonist decides to take matters into his own hands and does all he can to destroy their lives after being rejected by the lady. This leads him to instill seeds of doubts into the minds of the husband to make him take adverse action. He was successful as the husband kills his wife and gives himself up to the police. This reminded me of Shakespeare's Othello. The film was shot by Jean Rabier who has also worked on films such as Cleo from 5 to 7, The Butcher, Story of Women, etc.The scenes were shot voyeuristically that reminded me of The Blow Up of Michaelangelo Antonioni. The film also reminded me of Purple Noon. The protagonist played by Jacques Charrier was able to capture thee character's emotions quite well. The same can be said for Walther Reyer being able to capture the arrogance of Andreas. The protagonist can be considered similar to the talented Mr Ripley as he too took actions due to jealousy. The protagonist tries to take the blame for his Crimes but alas he now has to live with the burden of what he has done. He also couldn't find much more work much to the joy of me.
I hate such protagonists and wish such ill upon them that makes their doom slow and painful.
