Michael Caine is so British, it hurts. This is one of the finest comedies I've seen in quite some time. I was into this movie from the first scene, and they managed to accumulate these colorful characters and scenarios to their natural conclusions. Frank Oz's direction breathes so much life into these moments, with great lighting, funny timing through editing, and pacing to deliver a movie that is dripping with personality on the technical side.
Steve Martin and Michael Caine were the perfect people to play these distinct characters. They each do a great job at using body language, facial expressions, and deliver to further elevate the juxtaposition between their methods of swindling money from women.
We see from the beginning that the characters are good at what they do, even if they have different approaches, and this makes the comedy of errors more potent as their clashing approaches lead to hysterical consequences.
The writing in general was extremely witty, but I was most surprised by how they treated the character of Janet Colagte. Not to spoil anything, but they do something interesting with her character that subverts the "oblivious female love interest" trope.
Overall, this is a delicious comedy of errors boasting great performances, fun writing, and pacing that keeps the movie going forward. I would highly recommend it.
