How are you going to a film adaptation of Nine the musical and not include the song, “Only with You.” I haven’t watched the actual musical but I’ve listened to the broadway cast recording with Raul Julia and there’s so much emotion in those songs and you’re just hearing it! Honestly, now that I’ve seen this movie, I see that the plot is about a super horny man that can’t write and cheats on his wife. I’d love to see Raul Julia play that. I’d do anything. He played Guido in 1982, which in my opinion, the 80s were his prime.
I also found out that Antonio Banderas played in the broadway revival. You have got to be kidding me. Two fine people playing Guido.
Anyway, enough about those gorgeous men, Daniel Day-Lewis’s singing is killing me. That may be controversial but his singing in this is just not appealing to me. It might be because I’m biased, but I’m appalled because I thought Lewis could fulfill this role. I just don’t like it.
Plus the kid! From what I’ve read and seen, the kid in the musical is his younger self and it actually contributes to the plot of the musical. This film just spawns the kid right in the middle of the film and gives no explanation. It makes no sense. This whole film, without any context, makes no sense.
Moral of the story is that I’ve got to get a time machine and go see Raul Julia in this musical on broadway.
