Alright my first 2025 release and it’s a good one!
Interesting documentary. I can remember somewhere in the early 2000s (possibly before the first Paul WS Anderson film was released) finding the Romero Resident Evil script online and thinking it was good and a shame it never got adapted. For years I wondered “Did I read the actual script or another fanfic posing as it?” And this confirmed that it was indeed the one I read!
Damn, almost depressing that this isn’t the movie we got! In a time where video game movies were known for taking too many liberties and pissing the fans off, this sounded like it captured the spirit of the first game well, even with some liberties (like with the characters of Chris and Barry especially). But also you realize even if it did it would have to face the worst enemy horror movies faced in the 90s: the MPAA! Sounds like worst case scenario is it would have been released NC-17 and bombed as a result and best case is being released cut to hell and being a kick ass unrated director’s cut Blu-ray years later! Damn, I’d love to visit the alternate universe where this movie exists and possibly bring back a copy so the 2021 Welcome To Raccoon City isn’t the best live action adaptation (and I thought that was good but still very flawed).
But this also is a good look at how impactful Romero was to the horror community and film industry as well. You love to see these people talk about how much he changed their lives and how his death in 2017 really affected them. Even if most of the films he made in the later half of his career are not as good, the man still was a legend and his legacy cannot be forgotten!
So yeah, high recommend for fans of Romero, Resident Evil, and just horror altogether
