A shallow illustration of the foreigner problem in Malaysia, mixed with the expression of sexuality, and the distress of brotherhood between a brat and an overprotective good samaritan. The demonstration of struggle after being orphaned is feather-light, further underlining platonic love and willingness for amateur sex work instead, hence the film loses focus because of one brother’s vile destruction. As the demolition of hope strikes, the villain of the pointless story is framed, urging the viewer to summon hate upon the “noble” piece of shit dude, yet I pity not the brothers. It’s mind boggling to understand the film’s emotional impact is actually a split of brothers due to one’s rancid carelessness and his inability to feel gratitude. The film slowly reveals itself to be a dead-ended highway, all anguish gathers at the pivotal moment where the younger fella avoids his father’s existence, at the same time he doesn’t learn to take action on his older brother’s sacrifice.
The director input one shot of the younger brother on an overhead bridge with a banner on top saying “we are the children of Malaysia”, I believe this was done to invoke guilt onto particular parties in regard to a possible real-life issue in the country. Nobody was affected it seems.
You see, the thing with this film is that the character was given a chance, but he fucked himself over. The hefty message of mistreatment can be conducted still but the audience will blame the brat and not the system after finishing the film. Is that what the director was trying to achieve?
