Happy Friday the 13th!
Is giving the final girl superpowers stupid and unrealistic? Yes. But in the 7th installment of a franchise as rocky as this, I don’t see anything wrong here. It’s fun, different, and it makes me actually like the character, which is a rarity in the franchise. Unfortunately, the rest of the film is rather mediocre. The acting is atrocious, this is the worst the MPAA had censored its deaths, although it did gives us the iconic single swing sleeping bag kill. It was supposed to be multiple swings, ending in a blood soaked sleeping bag, but there’s something about Jason’s single strike that feels more brutal.
The New Blood also has my favorite Jason look the franchise, with his exposed vertebrae, the chain noose hung around his neck, and a chipped up mask, this is the first film in the Kane Hodder era, and what a way to introduce yourself into this franchise. While the films he’s in are terrible, he is my favorite Jason, and like he says, he was born to play this role.
