Even though it had its fair share of shortcomings, I’d be lying if I said that I didn’t love this. The slice of life mixed with the Pom-poko tomfoolery made for a wonderful little movie with absurd, cute, and goofy creatures doing absurd, cute, and goofy things. There are cats, frogs, oni, little chirpy birds, and a ton more to love here, and all of the spirits are drawn with the utmost charm and simplicity (even if I can’t say the same about some of the humans…) I didn’t adore it as a movie, but I did find it to be an endlessly charming and cozy fable, so it’s a success in my book!
I hate to be that guy, but I do feel as though this is one of those (rare) feature lengths that would work a lot better as a short, or even a Yamadas-type anthology. That’s just me being a consumer, though. It was great. Watch this.
