I watched this mainly because of Anthony Mackie and Morena Baccarin. Was it worth it? More or less. It’s one of those classic post apocalyptic movies where humanity is dealing with seemingly unstoppable alien creatures and people are trying to figure out how to defeat them.
The biggest issue for me is the lack of worldbuilding. The movie introduces some interesting ideas but never really explores them. For example, the aliens apparently can’t climb above 2500 meters of elevation… but the film never explains why. It just states it as a rule and moves on. It feels like the kind of detail that could have made the world much more interesting if they had spent a bit more time developing it. Maybe they left it open in case there’s a sequel, because there are small hints that the story could continue, but right now it does feel a bit incomplete.
One thing I did like, though, is that the film doesn’t rely on flashbacks to show the alien invasion. Instead, you slowly learn what happened through the characters talking about it. That approach actually helps the pacing and keeps the story moving forward without constantly stopping to explain the past.
The alien design is pretty cool. They reminded me a bit of the creatures from The Tomorrow War, which I thought was a nice touch. The action scenes are decent too. It has that kind of Alien or Predator energy where the enemy is clearly much stronger and more dangerous than the humans, so survival becomes the main focus.
Performance wise, the main trio does a solid job. Anthony Mackie, Morena Baccarin, and Maddie Hasson carry most of the film. If I had to pick, Morena Baccarin probably stood out the most for me. Her character feels a bit more layered and she shows a bit more range, although Mackie is still good in his role.
There’s also an interesting element near the end involving a chemical formula and a specific combination they use, and I honestly found that idea pretty intriguing. I wouldn’t mind learning more about that if the story ever continues.
The camera work is good overall. There are a few shots that I really liked, especially the sequence where the alien is hunting them inside the mine. That scene was pretty tense and worked really well. The soundtrack is also decent and fits the tone of the movie.
Overall, it actually reminded me a bit of War Machine in the sense that it’s a simple, entertaining sci fi survival story. The difference is that here the characters aren’t soldiers or Rangers, just people trying to survive against something way more powerful.
In the end, it’s a decent movie. Not amazing, but not bad either. If they expand the world and explain more about the aliens and the rules of this universe, it could definitely become a more interesting franchise. For now, it’s a solid one time watch.
