I watched The Outcasts today after seeing it featured in the Woodlands Dark and Days Bewitched documentary. It was a perfect, almost nostalgic vibe for a slow afternoon. You know how movies feel when you’re sick at home as a kid? That’s how this felt. Maybe it was the setting, or that it’s from the 80s, or because it has a fairytale-like quality to its storytelling and scenery, but it was a mood.
The film follows a girl named Maura, living in a small Irish village in the 1800s. She’s a bit different, probably neurodivergent, and is constantly ridiculed by her community and family. But everything changes when she meets the mythical Scarf Micheal, a wandering outsider like herself. Through his kindness and understanding, something long buried awakens in her, igniting hope into her otherwise hopeless world. Rumors and accusations of witchcraft being to spread in the village, and Maura is forced to choose her path in a place that has always rejected her.
This is a beautiful story about being an outsider, finding your inner strength, and embracing life beyond the boundaries you were given.
