I learned English when I was about 7 years old. When I was 9 I had an American friend who loved the movie Spaceballs. We used to watch it and I’d sit and pretend to laugh whenever he laughed. The clever wordplay in the dialogue didn’t just go over my head, the style of humor felt otherworldly, it was one of the first times I felt a real cultural gap.
I’m now 25 and I think it’s fitting that my viewing of this screwball comedy remake was sat between a middle aged white couple and a young Dominican couple. Heard many laughs in my right ear and many “Que?” in my left. What a country. What a movie.
