❝Music is born of misery. Of suffering. Happiness never produced a beautiful melody.❞

Maria is a melancholically beautiful film that washes over the viewer in tragic wave after wave. Angelina Jolie was the epitome of elegance and grace, and although she doesn't resemble Maria Callas, she captured her essence in an exquisite performance. The cinematography was unquestionably gorgeous, with some particularly stunning shots of Paris, and I absolutely loved the costumes and set designs. I also adored the soundtrack and the use of opera to show the differences between past and present Maria. The last 20 minutes were devasting, but I felt that the film ended a bit abruptly; the credits with actual footage of Maria brought me to tears though.
I absolutely loved Maria and intend to watch the rest of Pablo Larraín's 'Important Women' trilogy.
