It’s undeniable at this point that I have soft spot for the space thriller, it seems no matter how low I dip into the average rating pool to find one I still manage to have such a good time with the watch and this erotic horror with a fun cast and an intriguing sci-fi concept is the perfect example of that. It’s very clear to me why people hated this, it’s takes a long time to delve into the action and thrill of the story but considering I had just as good a time with the exposition as I did with the climax it’s not a problem for me at all. The script is also as bare bones as sci-fi scripts come and offers little to no improvements or spotlights on the great concept, the writing only ever reaches above mediocrity when Spader and Bassett are sharing the screen and elevating it. The rest of the performances next to them unfortunately aren’t great as the only one I enjoyed outside of the two leads was Robin Tunney but that also didn’t have too terrible an impact on this experience for me, Lou Diamond Phillips also wasn’t bad. Unsurprisingly when considering it was the main reason I watched this the look of it was my favorite part, there are some really great space visuals here and I only wish we got more of that great look as the focus on story’s climax in the second half didn’t leave much time for the visuals to have as much impact as they did in the first. David C. Williams and Burkhard Dallwitz’s score was also a big highlight for me, it worked well for the tension in the climax and along with the visuals built a solid atmosphere for me to sink into and enjoy. In the end the story does twist and turn in ways we’ve all seen before and the script leaves a lot to be desired but I really enjoyed some of these concepts, Angela Bassett especially, and the technical choices throughout, getting the enjoyment I have out of poorly criticized space thrillers like this one and Solis has fully opened my eyes to how much out there is made for my enjoyment and I’m now only more excited to see what other “gems” are hiding out there.
