Billy Chapel (Kevin Costner), a pro ball pitcher for the Detroit Tigers, is on the cusp of what might be his last game ever, a revelation that leads him to reminisce on his 19 year career and the other great love of his life, his on again/off again affair with journalist Jane (Kelly Preston).
I know shit all about baseball and this would have to be one of the most white bread snooze inducing romances of all time, between two chemistry deficient leads, yet even I felt myself getting sucked into the drama of the game as the film wore on.
Costner and Preston have a decent cast around them with John C Reilly as trusted catcher to Costner’s pitcher, JK Simmons as really wanting this one win Manager of the team and Logan Roy as the team owner.
Don’t expect any of the visual flair that we know and love of Raimi, this is a flat pedestrian effort, all the more frustrating when you think of the what could have been. Dutch tilt angled swings and misses. Snap zooms as ball connect with bat. That groaning Evil Dead shot close to the field to mimic the movement of a ground ball. Following a ball all the way from finger tips to catcher’s mitt.
But yeah, none of that. We don’t even get the Oldmobile. It was featured in a scene but was cut in the final edit.
