So much to say about this.
I thought the colour grading of the film was off until I read -halfway through the film- that Bogdanovitch wanted this to be in black&white. Understandable. I know what my next side quest is going to be : finding the Director's cut.
It felt very much like fan service at times, with several nods to What's Up, Doc? and Paper Moon. Either way, I love both, it was great. I'm a fan, and I like to be served.
Ryan O'Neal was a great actor and I'll die on that hill. So much comedic talent and timing in him. It's just too bad that most of his films and his career went awry so quickly. I consider this one of his last genuinely great films.
That being said- he was a terrible father and that's such a shame because his chemistry with Tatum both in this and Paper Moon is unmatched. It’s bonkers that it didn’t match reality though.
Burt Reynolds spends a good deal of the film without a moustache, which felt borderline criminal at times but the 70s were all about that. Or so I heard. Him and Ryan were secretly in love in this movie, I won’t have it any other way.
But anyway, this was a sweet little love letter to early Hollywood. Babylon could never (I guess, I've never seen it).
