This isn’t your typical vampire story, therefore I don’t think you should expect bursting into flames when exposed to sunlight, or tons of blood. This is more like a cautionary tale. Based of a German short story (Laßt die Todten ruhen / Wake Not the Dead), Leonor follows a noble man in medieval France whose wife has died by a horrible accident. Despite being in mourning, and after not making sure his late wife’s resting properly, he remarries and lives his life with the memory of Leonor still haunting him. Like a man does, he doesn’t listen, and embarks in a rather stupid odyssey to get back the love he has lost a decade prior.

I read the story. I didn’t know it had an adaptation. There’s some charm to stories like this, that escape the canons and ‘rules’ society has defined for certain topics. As a vampire enthusiast, I enjoy watching the vast depictions of vampirism. This one was interesting, as it follows the ancient lineaments of it being more spiritual than gory. Leonor is a vampire, yes, but she doesn’t burst into flames under the sun. Her soul is dammed. Her spirit is trapped. She’s bound to wander and consume the blood and spirit of those around her so she doesn’t wither away.

I can understand how this might look silly to most people. It is very campy, specially in some parts where it could look a little stupid. But I enjoyed it. A product of its time. Didn’t like the end, though, but it is an overall decent film.

Liv Ullmann as a vampire has my HEART.
