In Japanese folklore, demons aren’t always creatures lurking in the dark sometimes they’re people stripped of their humanity, consumed by greed, vengeance or violence. Toshio Matsumoto takes that idea and drags it to its extreme. Violence here isn’t entertaining; each act feels inevitable, as if everyone was doomed the moment they stepped into the story.
It’s not an easy watch, but it’s strangely intriguing. Everyone is complicit. Everyone is corrupted. By the end, you’re not shocked anymore you’re just exhausted, as if the film wrung you dry.

the film greets you with this look of being just a simple yet there's that underlying tone within it, it shows the moral decay of our mc, as it was literally the whole plot of the story, where he's just going batshit crazy by the end of the film

I really like how they represents humanity is lost when one abandons their own moral responsibility and compassion

also I would like to talk about the fact that this goes against the honor of samurai, like the code of honor and typa things, like respect, responsibility things within them, I like that this goes against those norms

the Buddha being symbol of something so of course I had to research that also, well there's this idea, idk where it came from but whatever it's just related to Buddha, it says that attachment to desire, wealth and yk all of that, leads to hellish existence and I couldn't agree more

can any type of revenge even be counted as a pyrrhic victory? i don't think so. gengobe, in the name of revenge, loses himself entirely.
the film ends on a note of total destruction. he gets his revenge, but it brings him no peace. he murders innocent people and destroys any shred of the man he once was.
the final shots emphasize the “asura” path; a cycle of eternal suffering and violence with no exit.

Buuuuuuuuuuuut that is not the case when it comes to this movie. Shallow and lacking any actual substance other than "revenge consumes you hehe". Kinda hate what this type of movie stands for. There are so many interesting things you can do with the subject at hand but no why do anything actually interesting and meaningful when you edit horribly, write juvenile dialogue, not act that great and then for some reason have beautiful cinematography. Kinda the recipe for alot of the highly rated movies that I refuse to believe that people actually like for any other reason than to feel smart because the movie is old and oftentimes also made in Japan.
