I had seen many a review describing this film as being heavily influenced by just about every 20th century crime director under the sun. But until about halfway in I wasn't really seeing the direct parallels that everyone else was, apart from the obvious tropes that most of these films follow. However the moment that the jukebox starts moving (in what I've got to imagine is a Death Proof homage) this becomes a big old Tarentino and Coen Brothers tribute act, and I was so here for it. I don't know if I have seen a film tackle the idea of the frivolity of money and violence this well since fargo. Not to spoil anything but there is a scene about half way in that is probably the best homage to tarentino I've ever seen. I find that people often call things "tarentino esc" or "right out of a tarentino film" without any good reason all the time, I mean hell I saw people call one battle after another a tarentino film presumably just because it had violence and sex, but by that metric the muppets were made by good old foot Jesus as well. But this film does seem to genuinely understand how to replicate tarentinos style, and by that I mean they played music and got violent, but most importantly they made me audibly go "whoa that went bad, but it was cool" , and isn't that what all good tarentino homages are going for. Seriously though this film was great, not only as a loving homage to films of the past but also as its own original film. Plus it mentioned badlands, that automatically makes it a win in my book.
