Okay I kinda love this film and how schizophrenic it is tone- and genre-wise. Like, are we a slasher film, a road horror film, a political message film, or a psycho-family-thriller? Fuck it, let’s be all of them. I think the former 3 elements are my fave segments of the film and leaning into that would have made the film work better. I adore how the film attempts to weave in social commentary especially around racism in rural areas, with its black characters, especially Hank my baby boy.
I wish the film had focused entirely on Hank and Tom (the guys who pick up our final girl) as protagonists, because I found them more interesting and compelling than the final girl (can’t even remember here name). Their friendship is so cute and 💕⭐️🫂, and I was really devastated when they died. Such an empty feeling and it shows how effective a horror film is when you care about the characters. They were lovers in my heart.
Outside of those 2 boys though, this film is kinda a nothing burger, so I’m just glad they got a substantive amount of screentime.
I really love the witchy and culty aesthetic of the film, and I think the film should’ve been a road slasher while still keeping those aesthetics. The kills are quite brutal too.
But oh well, this is still a great time to spend 90 minutes.
