i lowkenuinely have no idea how i even came across this film, but i certainly have no regrets after watching.
bye bye love, a japanese indie film from the 1970s about two partners in crime, a gender fluid thief and a careless criminal, on a road trip on their way to explore their sexuality, existentialism and their gender identity.
i really enjoyed this movie, because through their violent acts and their careless crimes, they are able to recognize that their lives are slowly coming to an end, and they rapidly need to enjoy what is rest of it. while riding stolen bikes and cars, geiko and utamuro are able to feel a sense of freedom, escaping their doomed end. they are not only escaping the challenging societal norms of Japan, but also their countless crimes.
i also loved the theme of love in this movie. the spectator can clearly sense their desire for love and the intensity of their feelings for each other. It kind of felt like a forbidden love, in my opinion. after watching, i wondered if it is called bye bye love because, as their crimes intensified, they lost their sense of reality and developed a love that quickly became fragile and dangerous, and that would end when they got caught and faced their punishment.
