**Woody Allen fucking sucks.**

I’m starting my review and will be starting all my Woody Allen movie reviews with this statement because I fucking hate the guy. 

Okay actual movie time: Small Time Crooks (2000). This film is so… fine. Woody Allen does not work in a starring role, he’s so annoying and unlikable. It’s got a fine concept but is just so annoying in its execution. God Woody Allen just drags this film down so much, I can’t stand to see him or hear him talk about the same thing every time.

I think the plot is fine, it’s a fine concept that really starts dragging itself down as it goes along. It’s pretty predictable and not in the good way. I don’t mean you have to surprise me, just make it interesting.

"what are you waiting for, drilling season?"

what a hilarious, nearly implausible premise that was carried out in an amazing way! it would've been easy to fumble a premise like this - starting with a crazy idea that just keeps evolving to even crazier ideas - but well executed! it kind of lost me in the middle, but that was just because by comparison the beginning and ending are so engaging and entertaining.

absolutely loved the variety in the cinematography in this film - in particular, the way that normal, conversation scenes were shot. the camera moves perfectly smoothly room to room, following the characters, whose conversation is almost always closer to rapid fire banter than dialogue (reminded me very much of 1940s-era comedy). the writing is already hilarious, but the execution just takes it to the next level.

frenchy is such a compelling character. implausible in all the right aspects, but still realistic and relatable enough that you can completely imagine her existing as a real person. i aspire to have her level of sarcasm and wit.

overall, a cheesy but enjoyable movie with a predictable but heartwarming ending.

as everyone's already said it got very very dull after it leaves the heist territory. like insanely dull. the first 30ish minutes were so onto something though. also some of this had potential to be funny but i think woody allen drags the jokes on far too long

Despite being lifted by the wonderful comedic performances by Tracie Ullman and Elaine May, this is mostly a chore of a movie. Its first half hour promises a madcap comedy, and it is frequently quite good, only to change midstream into class satire and another midlife examination of marriage that never really lifts off the ground. I kept wondering why Woody changed streams so drastically when he had such a fun premise, ultimately ending up with a forgettable effort.
