this was my palette cleanser for killers of the flower moon, which i recognize is an absolutely wild sentence
it’s been a while since i looked up these stats so they might not be as accurate anymore — but the murder rate of indigenous women on the rez is 10x the national average (murder is the third leading cause of death of indigenous women overall); indigenous woman are 2.5 times more likely to be sexually assaulted; and indigenous children are 3x more likely to be removed from their households (and, even in the wake of ICWA, over 85% are still placed with non-indigenous families)
this is a movie that somehow balances all of that and still finds time for levity (“auntie? i totally bled all over that cop’s car”) and hope, even when it feels impossible for both to exist — and that’s how you can tell that this was made by an indigenous woman, because no one else can tell our stories like we can
kaamotsíípiisa, for all our stolen sisters & those left behind
