Wow. I'm at a loss for words about this documentary, unsure how to comment about it while still doing it justice.
It features several archival pieces, interviews, and so many heavy, intimate narratives from the experiences that these transwoman have felt. It is honestly refreshing to have a documentary that comes from a person who lived in the Meatpacking District. I think a documentary like this could not have been beautifully executed and portrayed this way through an outside observer or someone who has never had to experience the sex work scene.
There are so many moments of joy, of vulnerabilities, of realness, of grief, of community. The Stroll really puts into perspective who these black trans-women are outside of sex work, even when sex work has become such an integral part of their identity and a survival strategy.
I honestly did not know the history of how intertwined gentrification and sex work were for New York and how it pushed for the black and trans movement. I learned so much from this documentary, and I cannot thank it enough for making me confront the uncomfortable.
